According to the CDC, respiratory viruses are among the most common asthma triggers for children and can significantly worsen symptoms. Research shows that up to 80 percent of childhood asthma exacerbations during flu season are linked to viral infections, particularly influenza and rhinovirus.

Local initiative making a difference In Northwest Indiana, the Multicultural Wellness Network (MWN) is working to improve asthma outcomes through education, outreach and in-home support. MWN received a four-year, $100,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Health to provide home-based asthma self-management education.
MWN uses the CDC’s EXHALE framework, which includes: • Education on asthma self-management • Extinguishing smoking and secondhand smoke exposure • Home visits to reduce triggers • Achievement of guidelines-based medical management • Linkages and coordination of care • Environmental policies that reduce asthma triggers
By combining EXHALE with the American Lung Association’s Breathe Well, Live Well program, MWN provides asthma assessments directly in homes, offers tailored education and partners with school nurses and teachers to reduce asthma triggers in classrooms.
“Our goal is to reach families where they live and empower children and parents with the tools to prevent asthma attacks before they happen,” Khisha Anderson, MWN Board Chairperson says. “Cold weather doesn’t have to mean more flare-ups when we prepare together.”
